Ho(m)egaarden

Ho(m)egaarden is a home-scale automated hydroponics bay which utilizes a sensor and actuator based feedback control system and can be housed in your living room. The sensing is controlled by pH, temperature, TDS and light sensors and the system is actuated by valves, an oxygen pump and an LED strip. The system is controlled by a mobile application providing human in the loop (HITL) control which allows for the maintenance of an optimal environment for crop growth. Our system is designed to be smart and cost-efficient, thus making it convenient for the everyday home-garden enthusiast.

Hydroponics has significant advantages over traditional soil-based agriculture in terms of strain on natural resources and crop growth efficiency. Although hydroponics is an effective solution, it is quite often an expensive one. Ho(m)egaarden uses robotic tools in the form of a sensor and actuator based feedback control system to build an automated hydroponics bay that can be housed in your living room. The system uses an aquarium like setup and the goal is to grow a single type of crop. We use sensor fusion where multiple sensors interact with each other to track vital growth parameters like temperature, humidity, pH, etc. The user receives this sensor information on a mobile application where the push of a button allows him to set actuators (oxygen pump, valves with different solutions and an LED strip) into motion which in turn work to stabilize growth conditions depending on the sensor feedback. The end result is a smart hybrid robotic system that integrates both home automation and hydroponics to ensure user satisfaction while in a small way contributing to environmental conservation.
